Landschaft 1/002

Description

Michael Reisch's landscapes start off as actual photographs shot using a large-format camera, and are later digitally reworked on a computer. In so doing, Reisch removes all narrative elements of human civilization and culture. He also modulates the elevations and depths of the landscapes, lending them a quasi-sculptural quality. Like in computer-animated video games, landscapes become a fictional product of the creator's imagination. Reisch's digital modifications make it impossible for the viewer to determine the landscape's topography with any greater precision – no matter how well they think they may know it. This visual tension invites the viewer to reflect on the notion of landscape in a world shaped by media images. It makes the very notion of a landscape difficult to imagine, define and isolate: bound as it is to a given cultural and subjective perspective, it is in a state of constant flux.

Reisch currently lives and works in Dusseldorf. He has been awarded several prestigious prizes. Reisch's photographs, which have been shown in numerous national and international exhibitions, are featured in many renowned collections all over the world.
