Roman Signer is one of the most significant artists of his generation. His works are often referred to as time sculptures, including the photographic work Ski presented here.A process occurring in physical reality is captured in a two-dimensional photograph but extended by the dimension of time. The red balloon is photographed along various stages of its explosion, and this transformation of materials through time trains the viewer's attention on the experience of the event itself, the changes created in the process and the forces involved.
Signer's work is almost exclusively preoccupied with the containment and release of energy, appealing to the viewer with elegant subtlety, frequently with captivating, epigrammatic panache and often with a charmingly compelling sense of humor. Signer himself describes his creations as "elementary".
The artist, who was born in Appenzell, studied in Zurich, Lucerne and Warsaw and has lived in St. Gallen since 1971. His works can be viewed in public spaces and major institutions worldwide, in both solo and group exhibitions. Roman Signer's oeuvre has been honored with numerous prizes.
