This monumental bear sculpture was commissioned specifically for this location when the Museum moved from its original location on Jackson’s Town Square to this spot overlooking the National Elk Refuge. The contours of the grizzly’s back intentionally mirror the rolling landscape of the Gros Ventre Mountains beyond. The title of this piece refers to the annual sockeye salmon migration, when the fish travel upstream to their spawning grounds. The pose of this bear suggests he is patiently gazing down into a stream, awaiting the opportunity to fill his belly with fish.
