The Large Poplar

Gustav Klimt

The Large Poplar

Description

Klimt took up landscape painting in 1898 and devoted considerable energies to it during his summer holidays on the Attersee. This painting of a tall poplar was one of two he painted of the same subject. This canvas has an atypically low horizon line. A small chapel is just visible behind the stand of trees on the left.
