The work in the Empire State Plaza Art Collection is one of Donald Judd's vertical stacks. It is made of ten identical boxes, with stainless-steel sides and amber Plexiglas tops and bottoms, regularly spaced one on top of the other. Unlike some of the sculptures in the collection, the arrangement of elements in Judd's work is completely visible at first glance and from all angles. All surfaces are visible as the transparent Plexiglas allows both the interior and exterior of the boxes to be seen. The work projects into the viewer's space simply and directly. Contrasting with the blunt, matter-of-fact design, light shines through the amber Plexiglas, coloring the space between the containers and adding a weightless, elusive airiness to the structure.
