Yellow Blue

Description

Ellsworth Kellys earliest sculptures are flat but refer to the activities of bending or shaping materials. Soon he reversed the terms of these early sculptural experiments, a reversal exemplified in Yellow Blue. Even though Yellow Blue is actually a bent form (two large, sharply angled sheets of painted steel affixed to a triangular base), when viewed from almost any position, it alludes to flatness. The non-reflective primary colors contribute to this effect. Kelly does not use shape or color to produce illusions that divert the attention from the materiality of the object. Rather, he emphasizes the material property of flatness.
