Duologue exemplifies Tony Rosenthal's continuing desire to initiate a dialogue with the viewer. Although it is an unusually small work in Rosenthal's uvre, Duologue appears much larger than it actually is. This is partially due to the segmented construction of the piece. Several organic shapes composed of curved sheets of metal are welded so that they fit together but simultaneously seem to be on the verge of forcefully repelling each other. The title for the sculpture emphasizes this contradiction. The prefix "duo" suggests that the segments are two complementary figures, a suggestion augmented by the association with "dialogue," that is, a harmonious interaction. But "duo" also refers to the type of saw used to cut the shapes out of metal and thus signifies the aggressive splitting of the original material. Through this ambiguity Rosenthal reinforces the sense of outward expansion characteristic of the work.
