The Cathedral Evening

Description

Cathedral Evening was conceived for the exhibition 14 Sculptors: The Industrial Edge at Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in 1969. The original massive wood construction of two large converging diagonals projecting from pontoons like an arrow pointing upward, aggressively asserted its presence in a confined interior space. The tension caused by the contrast between the soaring thrust of the sculpture and its enclosure is dissipated somewhat by the placement of the steel version in the Empire State Plaza Art Collection. Since it is outdoors, the surrounding architecture tends to dominate when the sculpture is viewed from a distance. Nonetheless, as one approaches the piece, its larger than human scale and the intensity of its expansive gesture assert themselves, and it becomes evocative of powerful physical forces.
