THE ELECTROFUNK MIXTAPE: ILLUMINUS EDITION

Description

Inspired by the TR-808 Drum Machine, which created an entirely new platform for musicians in the 1980s, these artists will use sensors and music to create a multimedia spectacle in a concourse of Fenway Park. The Electrofunk Mixtape is the result of a collaboration between the STEAM Lab at the Boston Arts Academy (BAA), Boston-based sculptor Brian Browne, and the “Phil Spector of noise,” Hank Shocklee. Electronics, music, and video projection will be layered on 3D objects that will hang or be worn by performers. Visitors will witness -- and participate in -- a responsive and highly visible 3D art installation that will respond to music and movement and light.

COLLABORATORS

BRIAN BROWNE

Local artist, bike enthusiast, cosmetologist, and sacred geometrist Brian Browne creates sculptural works composed of flexible and rigid components arranged according to Buckminster Fuller’s idea of ‘tensegrity,’ which is a form of floating compression that produced exceptionally strong and beautiful structures.

HANK SHOCKLEE

Hank Shocklee is one of the preeminent figures of the rap world. He has produced successful albums for Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Bell Biv Devoe, and EPMD, and has remixed albums for Peter Gabriel, Tricky, and Sinéad O'Connor. With these artists, Shocklee pioneered a new brand of production in hip-hop music with his noisy, layered style based on equal parts rap, punk, and rock.
