The Flock

Description

Zurich-born photographer Marianne Müller teaches at the Zurich University of Arts.

Her ten-part series The Flock features pigeons flying across the sky in groups or perched on rooftops, all etched in tones of gray. The artist spent several weeks in Brooklyn accompanying war veteran John Mandato and observing his interaction with the birds. She not only gained an insight into the lives of the pigeons, but also got to know the city of New York. The series, which at first glance appears unspectacular and banal, oscillates between sober documentation and visual metaphor. The Flock alternates between scientific observation and the almost abstract imagery of clouds. The work can be interpreted not only as a reflection on the relationship between the city and nature but also as a meditation on freedom and captivity and on the dialectic between the individual and the collective.

The artist, who has been awarded a number of prizes, currently lives in Zurich and regularly shows her works in solo and group exhibitions.
