Marc Quinn (England, 1964)

Untitled 10

Description

In 2000, Marc Quinn created a garden containing thousands of frozen plants for Fondazione Prada. He combined flowers that could never grow together under natural conditions. Quinn produced a number of photographs of his elaborate work that he then published as color pigment prints. The series of synthetic-looking flower prints touch on Quinn's recurring leitmotifs of beauty and death.

The English artist made his breakthrough in the international art market in 1991 with his sculpture Self. The work was sold to a U.S. collector in April 2005 for the sum of £1.3 million. Quinn has also gained prominence with his marble sculptures of people who are missing limbs either due to birth defects or as a result of amputation, however. Inspired by the aesthetics of antique sculptures, the pieces challenge mainstream categories of beauty and perfection.

During his student years, Quinn roomed with Damien Hirst at Robinson College, Cambridge University Both are members of the Young British Artists (YBA) movement founded in 1988.
