This poster was created for Germanys Sixth War Loan campaign in March and April of 1917. Most posters for the campaign were addressed to the German civilian population, but this poster was designed specifically for members of the military and displayed in barracks and other locations along the front lines. Germanys Six War Loan drive began only weeks after the Kaiser signed a decree ordering the resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare. The German government believed that U-boat attacks could break the stalemate on the Western Front by destroying the British naval fleet and, as the text on this poster suggests, prevent Allied weapons from reaching the battlefield. Within six months of the decree, German submarines had sunk over 413 British ships. But German aggression on the seas helped to persuade America to join the war, an event which ultimately led to Germanys defeat.
