Kenneth Noland

Here-There

Description

Kenneth Noland was a well-known abstract Color Field painter, who, when asked to work with I. M. Pei on the Wiesner Building, had never executed an architectural commission. As a studio painter, his challenge was to grapple with architectural scale and three-dimensional space, and he worked closely with Pei to develop his ideas. Here-There is a mural painted directly on the metal panels, with the colors announced on the building exterior and developed on the atrium interior walls. The colors suggest contrast and movement, creating a visual tension with the architectural space.
