Double One on C

Herbert Ferber

Double One on C

Description

Double One on C is an excellent example of the work Ferber did between 1963 and 1968, when he focused on freestanding, vertical sculpture with strongly drawn calligraphic images, especially S curves, commas, and apostrophes. This sculpture also demonstrates Ferber's concern with the creation of counterthrusting forms. The upward momentum produced by the soaring curved shapes makes the sculpture appear much larger than it is. Beautifully sited in an intimate square bounded on four sides by trees, it pierces the sky when viewed from one direction and provides a contrast to the stark marble buildings surrounding the square when viewed from another. Ferber used sheets of beaten copper brazed with bronze to create a highly reflective and textured surface, which is further heightened by the intermittent black flickers produced by the flame of the torch.
