Klimt made his first sketches for the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I in the winter of 1903. More than a hundred drawings are documented from the years that he worked on the portrait. In this example, the subject is seated in an armchair, and Klimt has lavished attention on capturing her full lips and distinctive brows.
