Trio

Description

Trio is one of George Sugarman's earliest large-scale outdoor pieces. In this sculpture and in other works from the same period, Sugarman abandoned his use of disparate shapes and colors and explored what he called "seed form"a single shape that develops and changes. The closed-top shape in Trio is the seed form from which the other sections grow and expand. In the last of the three sections the oval form is turned around and opened up, outlining a progressively large interior volume where an interplay of light, form, and shadow may be experienced from both inside and out. Sugarman himself suggested the siting ofTrio, and its location along a busy pedestrian walkway gives viewers the opportunity to walk through and around it, exploring its many curves and angles. George Sugarman's inventive and exuberant sculpture invites public participation. Even when it is very large, his art retains a human scale; rarely does it impose a heavy, monumental presence on the viewer.
