Two Lines Oblique, commissioned for the Empire State Plaza, is one of Rickey's Lines, a series of works in which needlelike forms rotate in space. Here, two 32-foot stainless-steel "lines" are mounted on the pivot points of a Y-shaped pedestal. They swing in large circles that extend from approximately 8 feet above the ground to 54 feet into the air. Compared to the slow motion of Calder's mobile at the Empire State Plaza, Four at Forty-five, the emphasis on movement is greater in Rickey's work. Furthermore, as opposed to Calder's organic forms, Rickey's are more geometric and simplified. Focus is directed to the blades, which revolve in a constant yet unpredictable motion. Their stainless-steel surfaces glitter in reflected light, uniting with the continuous forces of nature, wind, gravity, and time.
