Francis Scott Bradford was a widely admired muralist during the 1930s, who was known primarily for his allegorical and figure paintings. His six murals for the lobby of Sloan School are unusual among his works for their subject matter, the depiction of contemporary scenes of Boston and Cambridge. The mural titles are: 300th Anniversary; Boston Fish Pier; Esplanade Concert; Louisburg Square; A Winter Scene; and the John W. Weeks Bridge. Bradford was assisted by the young Robert McCloskey, who would later become famous for his illustrations and public sculpture.
