Description
The richly diverse creative output of British artist Darren Almond encompasses installations, sculptures, film and photography. The print Fullmoon @ Porto Mosquito presented here is an example of his landscape series Fullmoon, which Almond has been working on since 1998.
The high exposure time of 15 minutes and longer under a full moon makes night appear to turn into day. The image is suffused with an unearthly, unexpectedly brilliantly lit and cool brightness. Due to the long exposure time and the wandering moon, sharp contours such as the ocean surf melt away, shadows grow softer and surfaces blend into one another. The overpowering alienating effect rides the fine line between kitsch and mystique. The viewer is reminded of the illuminated cascading waterfalls in Chinese take-away restaurants, but at the same time Almond's photographic work draws on historical masters such as Constable, Kaspar David Friedrich and Cezanne, for whom the landscape embodied the sublime.
Most of Almond's photographs are taken in difficult-to-access or remote locations in Patagonia, Tasmania, Scotland, the U.S. or Cape Verde. An important priority for the artist is to show that this unspoiled beauty of nature is threatened with extinction.
Darren Almond currently lives and works in London. His works are regularly shown in group exhibitions both at home and abroad. There have also been solo exhibitions dedicated to the artist in renowned institutions such as Museum Folkwang, Essen (2006), K21, Dusseldorf (2005), Kunsthalle Zurich (2001), Tate Britain (2001) and The Renaissance Society, Chicago (1999).Details
