A Native of Sweden who was brought to the United States as an infant, Claes Oldenburg grew up in Chicago. He studied English literature and art at Yale University before establishing himself as one of the most influential Pop artists. Beginning in 1965, Oldenburg turned his attention to projects for imaginary outdoor monuments. Oldenburg's Geometric Mouse, Scale A, 1/6, in the Empire State Plaza Art Collection, is a case study of this kind of visionary project. Derived from the shape of an early movie camera and the stereotypical Disney cartoon image, the work exemplifies the formal inventiveness and mordant witticism of American Pop.
